🖼️ Aspect ratios explained simply – how to find the perfect image format for your wall
When choosing wall art, you often come across terms like 2:3 ratio , 3:4 ratio , or 4:5 ratio . But what do these actually mean?
In this article, we'll show you how to find the right aspect ratio for your wall art – and which format best suits your home.
📏 What does a ratio size mean?
The aspect ratio describes the relationship between the width and height of an image.
For example:
- 2:3 ratio → classic photo format (e.g. 20×30 cm, 40×60 cm)
- 3:4 ratio → slightly square, ideal for gallery walls (e.g. 30×40 cm)
- 4:5 ratio → harmoniously balanced, often used for art prints (e.g. 24×30 cm)
- ISO Ratio (A-formats) → as you know them from paper sizes (A4, A3, A2, …)
The aspect ratio remains the same – no matter how large you choose the image. A 20×30 cm image in a 2:3 ratio therefore looks exactly the same proportioned as a 60×90 cm image.
🖼️ Which format suits your space?
-
2:3 ratio
Perfect for single images, large wall surfaces or panoramic shots.
→ Goes well over sofas, beds or sideboards. -
3:4 ratio
Slightly more compact – ideal for gallery walls or smaller rooms.
→ Appears balanced and classic. -
4:5 ratio
Popular for art prints and portraits.
→ Works great in combination with square formats. -
ISO Ratio (A-series)
Useful if you are looking for standardized sizes (A4, A3, A2…).
→ Easy to frame, as suitable frames are readily available.
🌿 Tip: Choose the ratio and size to suit the wall.
Think about how much space you have on your wall beforehand:
